‘Leucadia Farmer’s Market Spotlight’ Article
Jeff and Jackie-The Bread Underground:
Named after his wife’s love for the rock band, The Velvet Underground, Jeff and Jackie have created quite the establishment. I was drawn in almost immediately by the beautiful bread and scone display at their tent. The Bread Underground is family owned, I got to meet Jeff and his son Logan. I asked Jeff about the origin of his bread making journey, he explained it in a way I think many of us can relate to. “It started as a side hustle during COVID, we were dropping them at people’s doorsteps” Jeff was working a 9-5 corporate job at the time and this was just a way to hangout with his family and connect with the community. “This “side covid hustle” became the hustle overtime” he explained. Him and his wife got started in their kitchen making loafs, but pretty soon, the buzz got bigger than they expected and they bought a large oven to put in their garage and started to work out of there. I asked Jeff what is something that makes their bread making business different from others, why buy from The Bread Underground? “You are what you eat you know? We make good bread, we are family based and by buying from us you are supporting that family.” was his reply. The Bread Underground is homemade and homegrown, straight from the kitchen, literally. While I was chatting with Jeff, he had a couple pick up orders to take care of. I noticed that this was something you don’t normally see at the farmers market, and I loved every second of it. Pick up orders are the future of the food and restaurant industry and Jeff was already one step ahead. The Bread Underground is innovative and a spectacular business that will only go up from here!
David-Deluz Blues:
I also got the chance to talk to David at the Deluz Blues Blueberry Stand, their stand has been around at the Leucadia Market since 2008. Their property is located in Temecula. David and his parents take the prideful ownership of being one of the first farms to sell blueberries in Southern California. The Deluz Blues company is famous for the delicious taste of their farm grown berries, David explained that there are seven different types that they do not sell in store, they sell based on taste rather than size. This company is completely family grown, it’s actually avocado based, but I had to ask him how they got into blueberries. David began to tell me the story, “About 20 years ago, my dad was looking at articles about blueberries and how they can grow in different climates” he said, “and all of a sudden, he grew too many and that grew into this!” Buying from the Deluz Blues is not only an investment in the community, but also an investment in your health. They are a local business and grown right here in Southern California. They are seasonal, so get them while you can! You will only get a glimpse of Deluz Blues around late April, by early July, they will be gone!
CocoBear:
You might’ve seen this tent walking down the farmers market thinking, “Wow those coconuts are exactly what I need on this hot Sunday morning!” Not only is their taste astounding, but the story behind the story behind this certain type of fruit is just as amazing. It might be their first time at the Leucadia Market, but Sebastian was fully prepared to sell me on CocoBear Coconuts. Imported directly from Thailand and what used to be forbidden to the public, these coconuts have a taste like no other! Love is what really got this whole business started, one of the three owners of CocoBear Coconuts married a Balinese princess who then was given the rights to these coconuts, from there they created a surprising establishment. Not only are these coconuts delicious, but they’re also sustainable, the goal is to recycle the shell and turn it into activated charcoal.
