‘Summer Fun on the 101’ Article

Summer Fun on the 101 is a lively mid-summer festival held right in the heart of Leucadia, in Roadside Park. The festival was started approximately 13 years ago to feature local musicians and to raise funds for 2 music scholarships for two graduating students planning to study music after they leave San Dieguito Academy High School.

As I watched people roll in on bikes, skate boards and by foot, just strolling in from their morning walks, I realized that it feels like home to many. As I watched them set up in the front row, I could've sworn that they were locals, they had the tent, the snacks, and lawn chairs, plus, they were there an hour before the music even started, but surprisingly, this is not home for Joe and Ginny, a couple I spoke to early Saturday morning just as the music began. They drove all the way from north Orange County to come enjoy the free show! Though this may have been their first time at the Summer Fun festival, they have been Southern Californian locals for about thirty years. When I asked them why they decided to attend this year, their answer was, “...well, because we really like live music.” Their answer was as simple as that, and I soon came to realize that that is what Leucadia is all about. Summer Fun on the 101 mini music festival brings people together, but the community in Leucadia is inviting year round. Leucadia opens the door for community, culture and a simple life by the sea. Couples, families and passerby's all gathered in harmony to observe 8 local bands play from noon to 7pm. The event was free to attend and featured a beer garden for those 21 and up. The Summer Fun on the 101 was an amazing experience, it is something so pure and is so adored by many.
